MILWAUKEE - Senior setter Nikki Klingsporn (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan H.S.) of the Marquette University women's volleyball team has signed a contract to play professional volleyball with VC Wiesbaden of the Bundesliga Frauen in Germany.
“We are excited and proud to have another stellar player join the professional ranks," Marquette head coach Bond Shymansky said. "Nikki helped us build a superb offense, and she was a winner in every way. I would love for every one of my players to graduate and continue their career at the next level."
Klingsporn had a memorable two years at Marquette, finishing fourth in school history with 2,626 career assists, including 1,391 in 2010. Her average of 12.10 assists per set in 2010 ranked fourth in the nation and helped the Golden Eagles rank 11th nationally in hitting percentage (.288) and 28th in kills (14.12 per set).
"The dream of playing volleyball shouldn’t end here at Marquette, it should be enlightened here," Shymansky said. "We feel that playing in our system at Marquette is a launching pad for professional volleyball. The German league that she will play in will be tough and competitive so she will have to continue to elevate her game. But the experience of seeing Europe and learning about a new culture will have a life long effect. I am immensely proud of Nikki, and she will be greatly missed.”
The Oakdale, Minn., native helped the Golden Eagles to their best season in school history in 2010 by setting program records for wins (23), BIG EAST Conference victories (11) and consecutive matches won (14). Along with teammates Ashley Beyer and Rabbecka Gonyo, Klingsporn became the first MU athlete to be named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-American since 2006. Klingsporn was also named AVCA All-Northeast Region and to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The senior helped MU to five-set victories over Louisville, Notre Dame and Seton Hall during the 14-match winning streak, which stretched from Oct. 1-Nov. 12. In that period, Klingsporn tied a career-high with 62 assists in the win over Seton Hall on Nov. 7, while recording 61 assists against Notre Dame to help the Golden Eagles hit .692 in the fifth set.
Klingsporn is the seventh professional volleyball player to have played for Shymansky and second MU athlete in the past month to sign with a European volleyball team. Classmate Rabbecka Gonyo signed to play in Spain with Club Atlético Voleibol Murcia in early January.
Wiesbaden is located along the Rhine roughly 25 miles to the west of Frankfurt, the fifth-largest city in Germany.

MILWAUKEE - Former Marquette University women's volleyball player Rabbecka Gonyo (Ingleside, Ill.) has signed to play professional volleyball for Club Atlético Voleibol Murcia in Murcia, Spain.
"I am just expecting to go there, work really, really hard and see the court as quickly as possible," Gonyo said. "I have been told that they need a middle presence because they have a good setter and outside hitter. The last game this season I was upset because I thought I was done playing volleyball, but now that I have the opportunity to play the sport that I love after college, it is pretty exciting. Not many people can say that they kept playing after they graduated."
Gonyo finished a stellar four-year career with Marquette as the program's career leader in hitting percentage (.303) and block assists (364), while ranking in the top 10 in kills (10th, 977) and total blocks (second, 431).
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-American ended 2010 ranked second in the NCAA in hitting percentage (.429) with 325 kills and only 72 errors on 590 total attacks. That mark is the best single-season percentage in MU history.
With the help of Gonyo, the Golden Eagles notched their best season in school history in 2010, setting a program record for wins (23), BIG EAST Conference victories (11) and consecutive matches won (14). Gonyo was also one of three Golden Eagles named to the 2010 All-BIG EAST First Team.
“This is a special opportunity for Becka to continue her career onto the next level," Marquette head coach Bond Shymansky said. "But it’s also an amazing opportunity to experience a new culture, and see the world. Becka finished second in hitting percentage in the nation this year, and I knew it was only a matter of time until a professional team came calling. She contributed so much to our program and success, and now she will have the chance to test her skills at an even higher level. I admire her courage for taking such a big leap on such short notice. They called her one day, and she was practically on the plane the next day. We couldn’t be more proud of who she has become as a player and a person.”

Random Post About Sundry Things We've Stumbled Across As Though Each Were a Stray Ball That Appeared Under Our Feet During Hitting Lines
OK, here we go.
- "This is kinda big time." So begins a post on We Are Grantsburg about Bill Morrin's recent recognition as the AVCA High School Coach of the Year. We agree. Congrats again.
- From Mustang to All-American. Madison College's Ashley Biesterveld (Little Chute '10) has been named first-team NJCAA Division III All-American. Congrats.
- All-Region Honorees Amongst Us. Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Kerri Schuh (Kaukauna '07) and Rachel Neuberger (Muskego '10) were named to the NCAA Division I All-Midwest team. Marquette's Ashley Beyer, Rabbecka Gonyo and Nikki Klingsporn were named to the NCAA Division I All-Northeast team (er, isn''t the Klotsche located a little north and east of the McGuire Center on a map--ha). Neuberger was also named the region's freshman of the year.
- "Celebrate the success of volleyball players of African descent in hopes of encouraging black girls across the country to pursue the sport." That's the stated purpose of COBRA magazine, which recently named Wisconsin's Alexis Mitchell and Marquette's Ciara Jones to its All-Midwest team.

Fans of Polysyllabic Names, Rejoice: Wisconsin Sends 12 Syllables (Count 'Em) to the Division II Final Four
Both Concordia-St. Paul and Dowling have advanced in the Division II playoffs and will play each other at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
This means a Wisconsinite with six syllables in her name will assuredly be playing for the NCAA Division II Championship on Saturday at 3 p.m.
It will be either Concordia-St. Paul's Erienne Lauersdorf (Watertown '10) or Dowling's Morgan Mutranowski (Greendale '09). Try saying those names five times fast.

Two Wisconsinites in Division II Elite Eight
We haven't been tracking the Division II playoffs as closely as we might have hoped. Nevertheless, we count two Wisconsinites among those remaining in the Elite Eight:
- Morgan Mutranowski (Greendale '09) plays for Dowling (30-1) which will face Clarion in one quarterfinal
- Erienne Lauersdorf (Watertown '10) plays for Concordia-St. Paul, which will face California State-San Bernadino in another quarterfinal
Washburn, with Wisconsinite Hilary Hughes (Wisconsin Heights '09), made it to the Sweet 16, while Gannon, Minnesota-Duluth, Southwest Minnesota State, Northern Kentucky, Truman State and Northern Michigan all made the tournament field with Wisconsinites on their respective rosters. Let us know if we missed anyone.
Congrats to all and good luck to the two who'll be playing Elite Eight matches on Thursday afternoon.

Ugh: Marquette Volleyball Has Second-Highest RPI of Teams Not Making the NCAA Division I Tournament
According to a discussion thread on VolleyTalk, Marquette had the second-highest RPI of those teams not getting a bid to the NCAA Division I volleyball tournament. In other words, ugh. We were also hoping UW-Milwaukee might get an at-large based on their stellar 20-9 record and high RPI. Ugh again.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship for the second time in school history with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 sweep of No. 6-seed Pittsburgh Friday evening at the Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The third-seeded Golden Eagles improve to 22-8 overall and will face No. 2-seed Louisville on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals. The Cardinals (19-7 overall) have claimed the last two BIG EAST Championships and have advanced to the conference finals every season since joining the league in 2005. U of L also claimed the conference title in 2006 after beating MU in five sets in Marquette's only other semifinal appearance.
Junior outside hitters Ciara Jones and Ashley Beyer led Marquette with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Sophomore middle hitter led MU with an attack percentage of .600 with nine kills on 15 attacks. Senior middle hitter Rabbecka Gonyo hit .583 with eight kills and one error on 12 attacks, while fellow All-BIG EAST First Team member Nikki Klingsporn notched 40 assists, six digs and four blocks. The Golden Eagles combined to hit .432 (45 kills, seven errors, 88 attacks) as a team, while Pitt managed only a hitting percentage of .182 (32-16-88).
Senior middle blocker Imani Harper led the Panthers with nine kills in the match, while Alexa Walker notched eight of her own. Pittsburgh falls to 13-18 with the loss.
Marquette shot out quickly in the first set, hitting a combined .519 (15-1-27) as a team and took its largest lead of the set at 14-6 on consecutive service aces from Jones.
The Golden Eagles built a 6-3 lead to open play in the second and Pitt responded to take its first lead at 7-6 after four-straight points. Marquette Volleyball's Press Release from Friday's Big Win Over Louisviille
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team completed a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory (23-25, 16-25, 25-19, 25-19, 16-14) over Louisville Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center and will play Cincinnati Sunday at 2 p.m. for the BIG EAST regular season title.
The Golden Eagles (21-7, 11-2 BIG EAST) have won a school-record 14-straight matches, including 11 in league play, and were led by 16 kills from senior middle hitter Rabbecka Gonyo. Sophomore Danielle Carlson notched a career-high 15 kills, while junior outside hitter Ciara Jones added 14. Gonyo and sophomore Kelsey Mattai each had seven blocks and senior Nikki Klingsporn added five blocks to her 57 assists.
Louisville (17-7, 11-2 BIG EAST) was led by 15 kills from outside hitter Lola Arslanbekova and freshman right-side Emily Juhl.
After dropping the first two sets of the match 25-23 and 25-16, the Golden Eagles headed into the locker room to refocus and came out a different team.
MU hit .162 (24 kills, 13 errors, 68 attacks) through the opening two sets, but responded to hit a combined .429 (14-2-28) in the third frame with five kills from Jones and four from Carlson. The Golden Eagles jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third and led the entire way before a 25-19 victory. Louisville hit only .033 (10-9-30) after notching a mark of .373 through the first two sets.

The Golden Eagles will host Cincinnati Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center in a match to decide the BIG EAST regular season champion and the conference tournament's No. 1 seed. Gonyo and Klingsporn will be honored Sunday in a pre-match ceremony, while all MU volleyball alumnae will be honored between sets two and three. Sunday is also Marquette's 'Dig Pink' match in support of the Side-Out Foundation's fight against breast cancer.
The Golden Eagles (21-7, 11-2 BIG EAST) have won a school-record 14-straight matches, including 11 in league play, and were led by 16 kills from senior middle hitter Rabbecka Gonyo. Sophomore Danielle Carlson notched a career-high 15 kills, while junior outside hitter Ciara Jones added 14. Gonyo and sophomore Kelsey Mattai each had seven blocks and senior Nikki Klingsporn added five blocks to her 57 assists.
Louisville (17-7, 11-2 BIG EAST) was led by 15 kills from outside hitter Lola Arslanbekova and freshman right-side Emily Juhl.
After dropping the first two sets of the match 25-23 and 25-16, the Golden Eagles headed into the locker room to refocus and came out a different team.
MU hit .162 (24 kills, 13 errors, 68 attacks) through the opening two sets, but responded to hit a combined .429 (14-2-28) in the third frame with five kills from Jones and four from Carlson. The Golden Eagles jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third and led the entire way before a 25-19 victory. Louisville hit only .033 (10-9-30) after notching a mark of .373 through the first two sets.

You really should consider going to the Cincinnati match on Sunday if you can. This team is on a roll. Playing for Big East regular season championship.
Nicolet -- and outside Matt Klingspohn -- are playing Westosha Central in the boys quarterfinals. Update: Westosha Central wins a five-set thriller to advance to today's semifinal.
Tomorrow's boys semifinals are set:
- Milwaukee Marquette v. Wauwatosa East at noon
- Catholic Memorial v. Westosha Central at noon
- Winners play for the state championship at 5:30 p.m.
