Eight Posts #7: Ivy-Covered Rumors

MiddleHitter.com, an excellent site for men's volleyball coverage, has something called the 2010 College Commitments Rumor Mill.

If you scroll to the bottom of the above link, you'll find the name of a Wisconsinite. Once they confirm the rumor (or we do), we'll publish an official congratulatory post.

Until then, we'll just do a post like this that does a whole lot more linking of links than naming of names.

Catchall Post Until We Can Catch Our Breath

So much is happening it's a crying shame we won't be spending all day in front of our Gateway, but alas, we shan't be. Instead, we're gonna use this post to bundle the news and come back to it later this afternoon or early this evening or, you know, whenever. Feel free to add comments and, throughout the day, we'll try to publish the positive ones that help build excitement for this incredible sport in the state. Thanks.
Oh, and by the way, there is absolutely nothing more exciting than volleyball. End of post.

Sectional Finals Are Set (And We Know All But One)

Here's what we're looking at, people. We'll add links to stories as we find them.
Four schools, Kaukauna, Nicolet, Middleton and Catholic Memorial, could still have both their boys and their girls teams represented at state.

What We Said Then v. What We Think Now (Boys)

This post is later than it should be, but hopefully still early enough to build excitement for the games tonight. And Thursday. And beyond. Anyhow, we're gonna take a too-quick look at what we said in our sectional previews last August and compare it with current realities.

SECTIONAL 1

What We Said Then Kaukauna over Appleton East

What We Think Now Well, we don't think it's gonna be No. 4 seed Appleton East since they were eliminated in the first round by No. 5 Green Bay Preble/East, but there's still no reason not to think No. 1 seed Kaukauna will be punching a ticket to Tosa

SECTIONAL 2

What We Said Then Nicolet over Homestead

What We Think Now Even though No. 5 Neenah upset No. 4 Fond du Lac in the first round, we're still predicting they'll have their hands full tonight against No. 1 seed Nicolet. And speaking of having their hands full, No. 3 seed Homestead will be tangling with No. 2 seed Arrowhead tonight at Arrowhead

SECTIONAL 3

What We Said Then Waukesha West over Catholic Memorial

What We Think Now Hmm, we pretty much think this link says it all: a three-way tie for the Classic Eight title that will now be settled in the Sectional 3 playoffs, starting tonight when No. 3 Waukesha West plays No. 2 Kettle Moraine

SECTIONAL 4

What We Said Then Westosha Central over Middleton

What We Think Now Well, those who do the seeding think it's gonna be the other way around because Middleton is the No. 1 seed and Westosha Central is No. 2. All we'll say is we can't wait to find out how it all shakes out at Burlington on Thursday

SECTIONAL 5

What We Said Then New Berlin United over Kenosha Bradford

What We Think Now Kenosha Bradford ended up being the No. 3 seed behind No. 2 Franklin so maybe the seeding people know a little more about how this will go than we did last August. And speaking of a long time ago, we still like our crazy-early New Year's Day prediction of New Berlin United to win state so we obviously are sticking with them as the eventual winner in Sectional 5

SECTIONAL 6

What We Said Then Racine Horlick over Racine Park

What We Think Now Did we say Park? We meant Case. Just kidding, but No. 6 Park did fall to No. 3 Greenfield last week in a five-set thriller. (Racine Horlick holds down the No. 1 seed.) If Greenfield can get by Case tonight, it will be a very motivated Greenfield playing at home on Thursday in the sectional final

SECTIONAL 7

What We Said Then Milwaukee Marquette over West Allis Hale

What We Think Now Uh, yeah, we still like the Hilltoppers. If No. 3 Hale is going to have a shot at Marquette, though, they'll first need to get past No. 2 Pius XI

SECTIONAL 8

What We Said Then Wauwatosa East over Brookfield East

What We Think Now We were clearly off on our prediction that Brookfield East would make the sectional final. The No. 6 seed fell in four to No. 3 Shorewood. According to the seeders, we could be looking at yet another Tosa East (No. 1 seed) v. Tosa West (No. 2 seed) sectional final in Whitefish Bay for the right to go back home to Tosa

Tuesday's Sectional Semifinal Games Are Set

We don't have much time to blog today, but we do want to acknowledge first-round winners in the boys state tournament. The only results not on the WIAA brackets: Madison La Follette defeated Fort Atkinson in an FST (five set thriller) and Racine St. Catherine's over Greendale.

Highlander Invite Results

We know we're late with these, but we've finally backtracked to jsonline.com to identify how the teams that made it to Saturday's Highlander Invite quarterfinals finished:
  • 1. Milwaukee Marquette
  • 2. Kaukauna
  • T3. Appleton North
  • T3. Wauwatosa West
  • T5. Appleton East
  • T5. West Allis Hale
  • T5. Shorewood
  • T5. Wauwatosa East
Playoffs start Friday. On Thursday, we'll revisit the sectional previews we did last August.
