Day One Recap from Badger Region Girls Youth Regional Team Assistant Coach Rob Koehler

Rob Koehler, assistant coach for the Badger Region girls youth regional team, has graciously allowed us to share his recap of day one from the 2009 USAV High Performance Championships.

Girls Youth Recap

On July 22, the Badger Region Girls Youth team took to Court #4 at the Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center for their first round match of the 2009 USAV High Performance Championships, and quickly found out the importance of volleyball basics: ball control and serving.

Entering the International Division (the Region’s age group won the National Division in 2008, earning a spot in the top division), the girls understood the level of play would challenge them to perform at their best, and they welcomed that challenge. Facing their Florida Region counterparts, the Badger Region girls found themselves constantly trying to work their way back into the match from behind. Florida controlled much of the match with defense and tough serving, forcing the Badger Region girls to operate their offense out of system more often than they would have liked.

After a three-set defeat, the girls knew their opportunity to compete for a championship would depend on their next match, and the Puget Sound Region girls stood in their way. A back-and-forth match ensued, putting the Badger Region down two sets to one, facing a deciding set, and making their way into top 10 much more difficult.

After placing the importance back in the basics, the players filled their roles to push the match into a deciding fifth set. Timely blocking and transition offense from MB Kelli Browning (Catholic Memorial ’11) and strong passing and defensive plays from DS Taylor Golabowski (Menomonee Falls ’11) led the girls to a 25-16 fourth set win. After finishing 34 points in the fifth set without determining a winner, a service ace by MB Janelle Hobbs (Arrowhead, ’10) gave the girls their third match point, and they wouldn’t need another. A block kill by Browning and OH Veronica Chandre (Oak Creek, ’10) sealed the 19-17 victory, and earned the girls a seeding match at 10:15 AM on Thursday morning.

Underway in F-L-A: 2009 USAV High Performance Championships

OK, the last two days have pretty much been the day job equivalent of getting six-packed by Mr. Kiraly in his prime (which we're pretty sure covered about half a century), but we're back and, well, pretty much about the same as ever.

In an effort to catch up on all things volleyball in Wisconsin, we'll start with the 2009 USAV High Performance Championships that got underway today in Fort Lauderdale. As you may recall, we provided what we hoped was a complete list of every Wisconsinite who would be participating. Now comes the fun part. These are a few of the divisions we think we're following the closest.

Finishing Touches on 2009 Club Nationals

It was a flurry of activity. It was non-stop excitement. And it is now history. We've made the final updates to our Wisconsin One-Click post, which lists the final finish of every Wisconsin club team that competed in Boys JOVC, Girls JOVC or JVDA. Here are a number of additional numbers that might help put things in a little perspective:

• 21 Wisconsin club teams finished in the top 10 of their respective tournaments
• 13 finished in the top five
• 4 individuals left comments to our "Personal Bests and High Notes" post, resulting in a $20 donation to Special Olympics Wisconsin (BTW: There's still time to add your comments and up that donation)

Finishing Strong in Fourth of July Finals

This sort of ties into our "High Notes" post below, but both Wisconsin Select 18-1 (girls) and North Shore 18 Navy (boys) will be concluding their club careers in a playoff final. Wisconsin Select 18-1 will be playing Colorado Juniors 18 Brian in the 18 National Flight 4 final in Miami and North Shore 18 Navy will be playing St. Louis HP 18 Orange in the 18 Open bronze final in Atlanta. Good luck to both teams later today and good luck in the future to every 18s player who recently ended their club careers.

All We Know About JVDA All-Tournament

We know the JVDA all-tournament teams have been announced, but we can't find a link to share. We do also know that at least two Wisconsin players earned all-tournament recognition in the 16 Club division:

Personal Bests & High Notes

Let's be honest, there's always one more mountain to climb. If you win bronze in club, there's silver. If you win silver, there's gold. If you win gold in club, there are the open divisions. If you win an open championship, heck, you still don't have an Olympic gold medal yet, do you? And more than likely, none of the players we've been cheering ourselves hoarse for will ever reach the very, very, very top of this game.

Depressed yet? Please don't be.

Winning is great. Winning is a blast. Winning is what every player should try to do on every play. But volleyball is not all about winning it all. In swimming and track, you often hear reference to a "PB," which means a swimmer or runner achieved a personal best. And while there's no direct volleyball equivalent, we'd like to spend this post recognizing teams and players who achieved personal bests or ended their club seasons (or club careers) on a high note, whatever that might be.

Maybe it's a thrilling, three-set, 18-16 victory in a bronze playoff like PoWer Sauk 16 Royal experienced at JVDAs. Perhaps it's just the class and dignity with which some 18-year-olds finished their club careers with a loss on a consolation court. We want to hear some stories. And we'll get things started by listing some teams that ended their seasons on a high note by winning final day playoffs (please let us know if we're overlooking anyone):

Today in Louisville, two Badger volleyball recruits took center stage in the 17 Open and 18 Open JVDA finals. In 17 Open, Annemarie Hickey of First Alliance lost in a four-set final, while in 18 Open, Mary Ording of Munciana 18 Samurai won the championship in three. Congrats.

Milwaukee Sting 17 Gold in JVDA 17 Open Quarterfinals

OK, so what we think we know is that JVDA 17 Open will have its last day of competition tomorrow and that Milwaukee Sting 17 Gold is still in contention for a championship. Good luck on Monday.

Beyond that, we're trying to chip away at who's at which stage of the various tournaments. Which is a kind way of saying that we've made a bit of a mess of the post below. Please be patient as we try to clean it up--and let us know if you know something we should.

News from the Other 2009 Florida Nationals

Both Sky High 16 Black and Munciana 18 Samurai picked up national AAU titles in Orlando this past weekend. Whoa, did we just see you shrug your shoulders? Well, both of those non-Wisconsin clubs just so happen to feature a direct Badger volleyball connection: Ellen Chapman (Glenbrook South, IL '11) has verbaled to Wisconsin volleyball and Mary Ording (Cathedral, IN '09) has already signed with the Cardinal and White. Congrats to both (Mary Ording was also named an AAU All-American). You can see where each might fit into the Badger mix at our Wisconsin Badgers Projected Volleyball Rosters link.
