What We're Going to Do on a Craaaaazy Thursday and Friday and Probably Saturday, Too

Add positive comments to this post and share links. Everything positive you share will get its own bullet point in one of the following categories.

GIRLS DIVISION 1 QUARTERFINALS & SEMIFINALS
GIRLS DIVISION 2 SEMIFINALS
  • Tomahawk v. Madison Edgewood at 4 p.m. Friday MADISON EDGEWOOD IN THREE
  • Waupun v. Catholic Memorial at 4 p.m. Friday CATHOLIC MEMORIAL IN THREE
  • The finals will be the Crusaders v. the Crusaders.
  • (more positive observations and links to come)
GIRLS DIVISION 3 SEMIFINALS
  • Grantsburg v. Wisconsin Heights at 1 p.m. Friday GRANTSBURG WINS IN THREE
  • Auburndale v. Racine St. Catherine's at 1 p.m. Friday RACINE ST. CATHERINE'S IN FOUR
  • MarshfieldAreaSports.com (Auburndale focus)
  • We believe Saturday's final will be between two unbeaten teams. Something's gotta give. Can you say five-set thriller?
  • Marshfield Area Sports.com (Auburndale focus after match)
  • From "onpackerland": "D3 Recap - I think Wisconsin Heights actually passed better than Grantsburg, but the Pirates were still able to be more aggressive on offense. Tomorrow will be a battle of top players, with Morrin for Grantsburg and the Jeffcoat sisters for Racine St. Catherine's. Based on today I thought Grantsburg's secondary players were more consistent, and the Angel's will need a bigger performance from Kathleen Omelina if they are to win. Racine St. Catherine's good and tall front row may give Morrin problems, but Grantsburg has experience against tall teams, having beaten Washburn (four players taller than 6') three times this season."
  • (more positive observations and links to come)
GIRLS DIVISION 4 SEMIFINALS
  • McDonell Central v. Highland at 10 a.m. HIGHLAND ADVANCES TO FINALS
  • Valley Christian v. Burlington Catholic Central at 10 a.m. BURLINGTON CATHOLIC CENTRAL ADVANCES TO FINALS
  • If Valley Christian had beaten Burlington Catholic Central in the semis, the combined enrollment of the finals match would have been 148!!!
  • Comment from "onpackerland": "Highland = WOW. What a difference a year and everybody returning makes. Kendall Wienkes played as advertised, but unlike last year, when she rotated to the backrow her teammates really stepped up. Bomkamp, Greene, ands Rose all played exceptional on offense, there really was no let down when Wienkes rotated back. Not only on offense, but Highland won the match because they out defended McDonell Central. Carlee Yanna played outstanding at the libero spot with 24 digs, and I think Morgan Bomkamp really surprised McDonell Central in the middle with her 3 solo blocks. I think Karley Wiensch was the better setter in this match (accuracy wise), but Rachel Aide was not far behind as she is very deceptive in the way she back sets just about as much as she front sets, or so it seemed. In the other match, Lizzy Potratz was going to have to play outstanding for Valley Christian to win, and Catholic Central did a great job of keeping Valley Christian off balance, especially serve recieve. Potratz's teammates (Schultz and Rachel Potratz) did a good job when they couldn't get the ball to Potratz, but in the end Catholic Central passed better and used its balanced offense to its advantage. Tomorrow, if Highland plays as well as they did today, I just cannot see them losing, they should be able to meet Catholic Central's balance with Wienkes being the difference maker. However, Catholic Central's senior outside hitter Danielle Stoppenbach did not play to form at all today on offense. If she can play as she is capable, Catholic Central has five hitters capable of each collecting 10 kills any given match."
  • Another comment from "onpackerland": "D4 semifinal recaps by Jay Messar, including a great paragraph about the play and sportsmanship of Valley Christian's Lizzy Potratz."
  • (more to come)
So what are your thoughts? Where are your links? We'll do what we can.

Saint Cat's and Grantsburg as the only two undefeated teams in the state going head to head.....you could not have written a better script!!! These are two solid teams, not just 4 or 5 stars! They play every aspect of the game, and I for one can not wait!!

Wanted to give a "shout out" to Wisconsin Heights' senior outside hitter Alexa Barsness and junior setter Allison Roth.

Alexa wasn't quite at her best today, but has been a consistent force throughout her senior year. Roth is just a terrific all-around player who can play any position and does *everything* very well. In Height's 3-set loss to Grantsburg, Roth was fabulous, putting up an impressive 27 assists, 16 digs, and 7 kills in 10 attempts with no errors. That .700 hitting percentage is probably tops for all divisions in the tourney for players with 5 or more kills.

Roth is also excellent at chasing down errant passes and "bettering the ball", as Heights had lots of digs but struggled mightily in accuracy (in both digs and serve receive). The accuracy problems finally caught up with them today against a scrappy and disciplined Grantsburg team.

Highland dominated. They're on a mission and it seems as if the only challenge they've had was Southwestern in sectionals.

The Grantsburg/Heights match might have featured a STATE TOURNEY RECORD FOR PANCAKES! A lot of flat hand on the floor passes & amazing saves which the sharp officiating crew acknowledged -- both savvy & focused teams avoided premature celebrations! Great defensive match. Not a lot of impressive offense. Even Kortney hit well below her average with uncharacteristic hitting errors. The best part about the way Grantsburg played in the semi-final is that NO ONE has an accurate scouting report based on that play. WOO HOO!!! Tricky, tricky.
