Never is that more true than when it comes to our annual New Years Day predictions for the WIAA state championships in November. Yeah, we got it mostly right in 2008 and again in 2009, but we make no promises -- just five shots into the dark of a wintry January night.
- Girls Division 1: Burlington
- Girls Division 2: Catholic Memorial
- Girls Division 3: Grantsburg
- Girls Division 4: Highland
- Boys: Milwaukee Marquette
Feel free to share who you think is going to win this year, but keep in mind that we only publish the positive.

Watch out for Nicolet, Tosa East, and Waukesha West on the guys side.
Agreed. Almost picked one of those three (won't tell you which).
Not too sure about Tosa East and Waukesha West - but solid pick going with Marquette to win it. I would watch out for Catholic Memorial too.
Let's give some love to the Fox Valley, Kaukauna will be a powerhouse with so much talent!
Waukesha West lost all starters from last years team which did not make it to Sectional finals. I dont see them finishing higher than a 4 seed in their sectional, there is only 2 teams and Kettle Moraine that bring people back from last years team in the Kettle Sectional, Catholic Memorial and East.
Don't count out, Racine St. Cat's in Div. 4...The Lady Angels only lost one senior in 2009 and are returning some very talented players. Add a couple talented freshmen to the mix and they could surprise many.
Whoops my error, St. Cat's is D-3 not D-4...watch out for them anyway.
Highland girls return everybody from last year. They're a great prediction for Division 4.
Southwestern could be the only team to stop them from taking the title as they also return everybody from last year's very good team.
Nicolet, Catholic Memorial, and Kaukana will likely be the contenders for the state championship this fall.
Agreed, Waukesha West will not finish top 4-5 in their sectional. Catholic Memorial will be tough. That sectional will be really down, Kettle Moraine and Mad East will be 2-3 IMO.
I would agree with the prediction of Marquette as state champions for boys. If berg stays solid in the middle, foley steps up on the outside, jerominski plays good d and serve recieve at libero, and another middle and a rightside step up (they always have a solid if team with sean Riley coming up and aj from ns 15s) that should be he best lineup in the state with huts returning to the outside and schneck running that offense. If they all play well I'm not sure anyone can stop them.
However, I definitely think catholic memorial can give them good competition. I think they will have the best player inthe state this year with novotony and the best libero in Casper. If heyrmans hand heals well at setter they should be another contender.
I know I will be at Marquette on august 2nd for the early season matchup to see how this season will shape up (can they meet in the championship this year with the sectional schedule? Or will it be another year eighths best game in he semifinals?)

Nicolet, CMH, and Marquette will definitely be the teams to beat. If you look at the match up between CMH and Marquette its almost too close to call. Novoteny and Hutz, Casey(can not remember his last name, too many caseys on CMH) and Foley, with Heyerman and either Schneck or frosh D'amato as setter, these teams are scary how equal they will be. Nicolet is going to play into the mix with Klingspohn as the big threat and a solid cast of supporting players. KM will be strong, but will probably get knocked out by CMH in the sectional final. Kaukauna will take a shot, but their failure to get over the hump against Appleton North last year with a team that for most arguments was just as strong as this year if not stronger, leaves me to believe they will come up short. The Tosas will battle it out, but like Franklin and a few others they just are not at the same level as CMH Nicolet and Marquette.
