Well That Was Certainly Interesting

OK, the first week of the tournament is officially over. Here are some random things that jumped out at us in each division. More to follow throughout the day, especially if you add positive comments about the goings-on.
  • Division 1: Racine Park and Kimberly are the only No. 5 seed to advance to any Division 1 sectional We believe Racine Park beat No. 4 Greenfield in five sets and Kimberly defeated No. 4 Green Bay Preble in four -- everywhere else it was the top four advancing
  • Division 2: How about that LC-AX-GBND regional? Little Chute knocks off Appleton Xavier in a 15-13 five-set thriller the other night then Green Bay Notre Dame does the same to Little Chute in the regional final last night
  • Division 3: Two "last team standing' contenders are still standing We believe Grantsburg and Racine St. Catherine's have not lost a single match all season, including last night when both rolled into the next round with straight-set victories
  • Division 4: Wish we could be in Shullsburg on Thursday night It should be a classic duel when a very strong Southwestern team (junior Katelyn Hoppman had 18 kills last night and seniors Amy Tranel and Haley Jansen joined Hoppman as first-team SWAL honorees last season), takes on the Highland squad that we predicted on New Years Day would win the gold volleyball in Aswaubenon this fall
What piqued your interest?

Kimberly advanced as a 5 seed in D1 as well.

You are correct sir.....or madam! St. Cat's knocked of a fired up Shoreland Lutheran in straight sets. The Lady Angels are 39-0, and face Random Lake at home on Thursday.

Agreed with the match that is going to take place in Shullsburg Thursday night, that has potential "unofficial D4 State Championship" written all over it. I hope Shullsburg has a big enough gym cuz from what I've heard those are two communities that support thier volleyball teams extremely well.

If a person is looking for good possiblities for five set thrillers on Thursday in the Green Bay area, look no further than D2, both sectional semifinal matches I would consider a toss up on who is favored.

In D3, glad to see two Packerland Conference teams moving on to sectionals, especially Kewaunee winning a regional that has been dominated by Olympian Conference teams for the past ten years.

After Alma beat Cochrane - Fountain City in five sets in the regular season conference match, the Pirates return the favor in the regional final, beating Alma in five.

For the third time this season, Wausau East beats Wausau West, with all three matches going the maximum of five games.

Wow Southwestern vs. Highland on Thursday in what should be a state tournament game. Couldn't agree more. It'll be a battle, hopefully a five set thriller

I think it's too bad the Olympian conference is officially out of the tournament. In my opinion it is one of the most difficult conferences in the state at the D3 level. The problem is that they all knock each other out in regional play. I was very surprised the Kewaunee def. Mishicot on their home court though. Congrats to Kewaunee on a big win.

Anxious to see a matchup between Falls and Arrowhead (presuming they both make it through their first sectional matches). The impressive thing about AHS is outside of whatever the breakdown was on day 2 of the Sprawl, they have only lost to CMH. They have beaten, on multiple occasions in some cases, Kaukauna, Burlington and Muskego - all teams that are ranked higher than them in the WVCA polls.

Definitely a large assumption (MF vs Arrowhead)...they both face two very underrated teams(Gtown and Watertown). That is probably the best 4 team sectional out there. I know I'll be at Waukesha West on Thursday. I will say however that MF, when healthy, is the #1 D1 team in the state. IMHO
