2007: Year of the Libero in Wisconsin?

Did you know that the top libero in DI and the top libero in DIII played against each other at the Resch Center twice during their high school years?

Our story begins in the 2005 WIAA Division 1 finals where future Iowa State Cyclone Ashley Mass (Muskego '07) played against future UW-Oshkosh Titan Christina Cahoon (Watertown '07). Mass had 10 kills and 4 digs while Cahoon had 10 digs as Muskego triumphed in three sets.

The following year, both players and their respective teams met in the quarterfinals, with Mass and Muskego once again emerging victorious. In that four-setter, Mass had 20 kills and 20 digs while Cahoon amassed (pun intended) 15 digs.

Fast-forward to the present where Mass is a first-team AVCA All-American (the only libero on first-team, we might add) and Cahoon is the reigning Division III player of the year.

And here's the real reason we're talking about all of this now: Cahoon is also a candidate for the Honda Division III athlete of the year. The announcement will be June 21. Best of luck.
