Memo from Cheese & Volleyball's Executive Council on Lists and Accolades

Last year, we came up with the nutty idea of doing several lists, which was all well and good except we started mid-season and that created much stress as we tried (often in vain) to keep up. This year, we're trying to get out ahead of the season, and we're looking for feedback from you and you and you. Here's what we're thinking for the fall high school and college campaigns:
  • 2009 Freshman on the Floor This would be a list of high school freshman, boys or girls, who are getting significant varsity playing time. For the record, it is officially TOO EARLY to be sending us names so please resist the urge until your favorite player from the Class of 2013 actually takes the floor during the regular season.
  • 2009 Kills Per Match Last year, we tried to recognize any player who had 25 or more kills in a single match. Obviously, it's easier to achieve if the match in question goes five, but no lists are perfect.
  • 2009 Assists Per Match We didn't do this one last year and really should have. We're looking for feedback on what a list-worthy number of assists per match might be. The goal is to make the number high enough to be impressive, but not so lofty that there's next-to-nobody on it. Please leave a comment to this post with your thoughts.
  • 2009 Digs Per Match Last year, we seem to remember our magic number was 25. Everyone good with that or should we raise or lower that bar?
  • 2009 Blocks Per Match Don't think we did this one last year, but it would be fun to give the roofers of this world a few props. Anyone care to suggest a qualifying number?
  • 2009 Last Team Standing This list records any team, high school or college, that has managed to stay undefeated. It starts long and then we subtract teams as they pick up their first losses. To keep our sanity, we obviously won't start this one for a week or two into the season (everyone starts undefeated). And yes, the teams with the tougher schedules are at a decided disadvantage, but it's a fun way to follow teams you might not otherwise have been inclined to follow. Last year, for example, the Grantsburg Pirates were not only Wisconsin's last team standing, they darn near ran the table, finally losing for the first time to Wisconsin Heights in the WIAA Girls Division 3 Championship Game. And we had fun tracking their journey.
Any other lists you'd like to see? Let us know and we'll ll take it up with our Executive Council on Lists and Accolades. Thanks and, yes, the excitement for the coming season is definitely BUILDING!!! (That's right, people, three exclamation marks.)

Assists - 15
Blocks - 5

I agree, that 5 blocks is a good goal to shoot for. If we are having the kills goal at 25, should we raise the assist to at least 20? I realize some teams run a 6-2, and their setters are at a disadvantage.

Assists - 30

Agreed with Assists being at 30. It needs to be somewhat hard to get but not easy enough that everyone gets it

You also need to look at the boys game vs the girls game. Any good boys setter will hit 30 assists in a match. Maybe 30 for girls, 35 for boys.

I feel the assists should be 30 if running a 5-1; however 20 -25 assists if running a 6-2. Thanks for thinking of the setters!
