It's Us v. Us Day for Two DI Schools

Both Marquette volleyball and Wisconsin Badgers volleyball are having special fan day scrimmages today. We would love to hear reports from anyone who attends either. Just leave a comment to this post or send an e-mail to vbuberalles@gmail.com. Thanks.

Marquette is going to be fun to watch. I caught the end and they looked like they were playing really hard. And Wisconsin's loss in Klingsporn is absolutely Marquette's gain. Talked to the new coaching staff and players for a little bit afterwards and they were all really nice. This should be a fun season.

Here's my report (feel free to edit, and another perhaps more specific version will be on volleytalk.

There were about 300 fans there and the children were having a lot of fun with the players (many of whom look alike from afar).

They played three sets. Jill Odenthal, Jackie Simpson, and Audra Jeffers all played for the red team as alumnae. It appeared, basedon some predictions, that for the first two games they were playing split squad, with the likely starters playing on cardinal and red teams.

The freshman were playing well and adapting. The setting was improved and there was good placement and a variety of sets. There were some communications problems, as expected, but also they might have been playing not to get injured.

Of the new scholarship players, Mary Ording and Alexis Mitchell played on the cardinal team for the first two sets. Brittney Dolgner was suited for white but did not play until set number 3. Jessa Benson did the setting for Cardinal and Janelle Gabrielsen for white. Benson was hurt briefly but fortunately came back in.

Set 3 mixed up the white team again with what may have been presumed starters (throughout the match only six were fielded per side): Ohlander, Kuzma, Wack, Toon, Ording, Gabrielsen. DuPont was icing down for that set.

Ohlander looked as though she had more power than last season and of the newcomers, Toon and Maloney (a RS freshman) stood out. Caity DuPont seemed to hitting well as well, and serving was an improvement over last year.

Dolgner in sets one and two was wearing her now familiar sparkly headband but with a towel as a cape. The announcer said she had a "good game" the first two sets even though she didn't play.

(Feel free to edit to meet your fine standards).

Oh, and how could I forget - just Janelle Gabrielsen away from the first match!

Thanks for both of the above comments. We didn't feel any need to edit gobucky. Sounds as though everyone's more than ready to get these seasons going. Good luck to all.

We haven't checked it out yet (trying to do previews and all), but Marquette has Fan Day video on their site: http://www.gomarquette.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/082209aaa.html
