Five Intriguing Storylines From NCAA Division One

As is the way of this blog, whenever there's too much volleyball to talk about, we talk about those stories that intrigue us the most. This weekend is one of those times. With that in mind, here is our purely subjective roundup of five intriguing, Wisconsin-related things that have occurred so far this weekend:
  • Ohio University's Ryan Theis (Middleton and UW-Milwaukee) and Jane Sytsma (Madison Memorial '06) upset Duke at the InnTowner Classic in Madison. The Bobcats play the Badgers today at 1 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. We can't wait to see how this one plays out.
  • Marquette newcomer Ashley Beyer had a huge game (24 kills at a .417 clip) against Loyola down in Chicago as new head coach Boyd Shymansky notched his second win as a Golden Eagle.
  • Wisconsin newcomer Kirby Toon (Middleton '09) added another 10 kills v. South Dakota yesterday. She already has 29 terminations in her first two matches with the Badgers. Did we mention how we can't wait to see today's Wisconsin-Ohio match?
  • We don't do a freshmen on the floor list for colleges, but UW-Green Bay's Brittany Groth (Wisconsin Lutheran '09) is another first-year player who's already piling up plenty of kills. After a weekend of matches as a member of the Phoenix, she's already had 21 kills.
  • After dropping a pair to Iowa State over the weekend, the Panthers head to Mississippi to play in the Magnolia Classic. What intrigues us about is that their first match down there is against Akron, which boasts two Wisconsinites. Since the Panthers have 15 Wisconsinites on their roster and Akron boasts Alex Wiederholt (Riverdale '09) and Morgan Kuhn (Dodgeland '09), nearly half (15 of 32) of the players competing on that Mississipi court will be Wisconsin prep stars.
We're guessing your list might be a little different. So what intrigued you in NCAA DI so far this weekend? If it's positive, leave it as a comment to this post and we'll publish it.
