Seeing Seeing Double Double: A Look at the 2009 UW-Milwaukee Volleyball Schedule

Looking over UW-Milwaukee's schedule, the first thing that jumps out is actually two things: the unusual doubleheader against Iowa State in the non-conference portion of the season. The Panthers will play the Cyclones twice in less than 24 hours this August, which will continue what has become something of a rivalry over the past few seasons between the two schools.

In 2006, Iowa State defeated UW-Milwaukee in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament. Two years later, UW-Milwaukee exacted revenge at the Panthers' home tournament. Since the Cyclones were ranked No. 18 at the time, it marked the first time since 1999 that the Panthers had defeated a ranked opponent. Should be an interesting 24 hours in Ames.

Looking further down the schedule, one finds a number of former Wisconsin prep stars and other Wisconsinites who'll be returning to their home state for a match in the Klotsche Center. These are the players and coaches we've identified.
  • Bailey Reshel (Hortonville '09) will be a freshman outside for the South Dakota team that plays UW-Milwaukee on September 11
  • Matt Houk (UW-Milwaukee '02) is head coach for South Dakota
  • Jerad Gelante (UW-Milwaukee '08) is assistant coach for South Dakota
  • Angie Roidt (McFarland '09) will be a freshman setter for the Youngstown State team that plays UW-Milwaukee on October 2.
  • Lauren Ditscheit (Wauwatosa West '06) is a senior setter for the Loyola team that has a home match with the Panthers on October 17.
  • Mallory Curran (Wauwatosa East '07) is a junior middle for Loyola.
  • Melissa Hastings (Catholic Memorial '08) is a sophomore outside for Loyola.
  • Karen Sueppel (Cedarburg '09) will be a freshman outside at Loyola.
  • Marcie Bomhack Wolbeck (Catholic Memorial) is the head coach at Loyola.
  • Kim Bukowski (Waukesha West '06) will be a senior setter for the Valparaiso team that plays the Panthers on October 31.
Please let us know if we've missed anyone. And mark your calendars so you can check out a few of these matches. Now a final note: Look up and down the 2009 Wisconsin-Milwaukee roster and you'll only find two players who didn't go to high school in Wisconsin. Interesting.
