Twin-Digit Wisconsinites in the Twin Cities

Four Wisconsinites played collegiate volleyball in the Twin Cities on Saturday night, one in St. Paul and three in Minneapolis. And all four recorded twin digits in key statistical categories.
  • Whitney Meieretto (Washburn) had 16 kills for Concordia-St. Paul, helping the Golden Bears win the Division II National Championship. The match was a classic, ending 15-13 in the fifth set. At the match's most decisive moment, "[Maria] Steinhagen and Meieretto had back-to-back blocks to put Concordia up 14-13 in the fifth and deciding set." With 13 digs, she also recorded a double-double (or would it be a twin-twin?) on the night. Congrats to the senior on a brilliant career, which included being named to the all-tournament team. During her Wisconsin prep career, one of her honors was finishing second-team all-state in 2004.
  • And speaking of second-team all-state in 2004, another student-athlete with that on her resume, Amy Vos (Westosha Central) played a huge role in Iowa State's upset victory over No. 6-seed Minnesota in the Division I round of 32. Amy had 13 digs in the match. The Cyclones advance to the Sweet 16, where they will face Oregon on Friday.
  • Iowa State's Ashley Mass (Muskego) had a huge night defensively for the Cyclones as well, recording 22 digs in the Twin Cities. That brings her season total to 611, most ever in a season for an Iowa State student-athlete. We hadn't mentioned it before, but she was also named Big 12 libero of the year earlier this month. During her Wisconsin prep career, one of her honors was finishing first-team all-state in 2006.
  • And speaking of first-team all-state in 2006, another player with that distinction, Debbie Stadick (Watertown) also contributed to the Cyclones' victory, notching 11 kills (a career high) and 7 block assists against the Golden Gophers.
Congrats to all.
