We'll start by cutting and pasting exactly what we said yesterday about the girls:
Are these absolutely the best sophomores in the state? We don't know for certain (and we're not even close to pretending that the list is anywhere near complete). What we do know is that these are very, very good players who have been nominated by some very, very passionate readers of this blog. Keep in mind that this is a mid-season list. After the last whistle blows, we'll compile another that will hopefully include even more feedback from even more readers. Players are listed in alphabetical order. Errors are inevitable and we apologize in advance. Please let us know of any factual inaccuracies.
Now on with the list:
Mike Beeler-New Berlin
One of the exciting things about watching super sophomores is thinking about their future potential--and Mike is no exception. Of course, this second-year varsity starter is already a beast in the middle, putting up a terrific block and pounding the ball with authority on offense.
Patrick Bieser-Nicolet
Great dig after great dig after great dig is what Patrick brings to the court for the Nicolet Knights on a nightly basis. One of two Nicolet sophomores nominated, Patrick provides the defensive spark that allows the Knights' offensive players to deliver the kills.
Dan Casper-Catholic Memorial
A defensive standout, Dan is another sophomore libero on our list. He can do it all in the back row for the Crusaders--and also proved himself offensively over the summer by winning the Bradford Beach Jam with Central's Dayton Erickson.
Dayton Erickson-Central
How was that for a transition? Dayton's ability to put the ball where it needs to be earns him the distinction of being the only setter nominated to our list. He will continue to be a key contributor for Central.
Matt Klingspohn-Nicolet
Matt is the younger half of a powerful one-two offensive combination for the Knights (his older counterpart is Rob Mayer). In match after match, Matt is counted on to put up big offensive numbers. And more often than not, he delivers.
Nick Yannett-Shorewood
Nick is a powerful offensive force in the middle, distracting defenses from concentrating too heavily on outside hitter Nick Gibson, one of the top players in the state.

Funny, five of these six guys were on the same North Shore club team....
There are two standout sophomores at Wauwatosa West this year, both of which are second year varsity players. Mitch Lahmann and Alec Redlich have been in the paper several times for both blocks and kills, because they are only front row players. If West is going to be any good next year it will be because of them.
