Will the Vanguards Vanquish All Opposition: A Preview of Girls Division Three Sectional Three

It's the sectional you've been waiting for, mostly because we're falling further and further behind our plan to preview a new sectional each day. But ahead we shall plow with our preview of the sectional that brought you last year's D3 state champion Cuba City. Will the Cubans repeat? Or will someone else make a run to the Resch? Let's have a little a look-see.

REGIONAL A

Contenders: Aquinas, Bangor, Brookwood, Luther, Necedah, Viroqua and Westby.

Top Finisher Last Year: Aquinas lost to Cuba City in the sectional semifinal.

Random Notes: The Blugolds of Aquinas, defending Mississippi Valley Conference champions, are likely to win this regional again.

REGIONAL B

Contenders: Belleville, Boscobel, Fennimore, Iowa-Grant, Lancaster, New Glarus, Riverdale and Wisconsin Heights.

Top Finisher Last Year: Wisconsin Heights lost to Cuba City in the sectional final.

Random Notes: Wisconsin Heights has some serious senior leadership, including last year's co-captains Lauren Radix and Kalli Lochner. They'll also get some big swings from senior outside Hillary Hughes, who's headed to NCAA D2 Washburn University in the fall of 2009.

REGIONAL C

Contenders: Deerfield, Dodgeland, Marshall, Palmyra-Eagle, Poynette, Waterloo, Watertown Luther Prep, Wayland Academy

Top Finisher Last Year: Deerfield lost to Wisconsin Heights in a sectional semifinal.

Random Notes: Dodgeland has senior Morgan Kuhn (308 kills) and sophomore Samantha Schultz (298 kills). Wayland Academy won the Midwest Conference last year. Senior Gretchen Aplin of Deerfield was second team all-Trailways South. Senior Rachel Hein will lead a talented Watertown Luther Prep squad.

REGIONAL D

Contenders: Cambridge, Clinton, Cuba City, Darlington, Mineral Point, Parkview and Turner.

Top Finisher Last Year: Cuba City won the 2007 Division 3 state championship.

Random Notes: Cuba City is always in the mix and this year should be no different. While they graduated a total of 817 kills, they return junior middle Emily Kaiser (142 kills) and junior outside Katie Langmeier (174 kills).

Our Prediction: Wisconsin Heights over Cuba City in four.

Next Up: Girls Division Three Sectional Four
